St Briavels Castle, Offa's Dyke and The Devils Pulpit

Last weekend, I embarked on a thrilling adventure with Large Outdoors to stay for a multi-day walking and social experiance staying in the historic St. Briavels Castle in Gloucestershire. Known for its rich history and eerie atmosphere, this medieval fortress proved to be the perfect destination for a spooky weekend stay.

In total there were 30 of us, who all came together to enjoy, a stay here, and walk some ancient paths over two days.

A Walk on the Wild Side. One of the highlights of our visit was the exhilarating walk along Offa's Dyke and the Devil's Pulpit. The Devil's Pulpit is a rocky limestone outcrop and scenic viewpoint in the Forest of Dean District of Gloucestershire, England, within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is known for its views across the River Wye to Tintern Abbey, which stands on the opposite bank in Monmouthshire, Wales. Access is from the Offa's Dyke Path, and the site is close to the Offa's Dyke earthwork itself. It is possible to climb up onto the flat plateau of the rock, which can accommodate a few people. In the hollow behind the rock lies an ancient yew tree, its roots grown into and around a pile of stone.

Legend holds that from here the devil would taunt the monks and occupants of Tintern Abbey below.

Exploring the Haunted Castle. After our hike, we returned to the castle, a perfect place to explore its mysterious depths. The castle's imposing walls and shadowy corners created a perfect setting for the weekend, some of us shared spooky stories and legends. As you wander through the ancient chambers, hearing the creaking floorboards, the rustling of leaves outside, and the distant echoes of footsteps throughout the castle, all added to the eerie atmosphere.

A Haunting Experience. Our visit to St. Briavels Castle was an unforgettable experience. The combination of the stunning natural beauty, the rich history, and the spooky atmosphere made it a truly haunting adventure. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a thrilling experience, I highly recommend visiting this magnificent castle.
